Alejandro Casona
Words, wood, stone and water
Besullo is the hometown of the playwright Alejandro Rodríguez Álvarez, whose artistic surname, Casona, was taken from the name of the palatial house where he spent his childhood.
The son and brother of teachers, a teacher and education inspector himself, he soon stood out for his talent as a writer, and took an active part in the cultural development of his home town, bringing the Pedagogical Missions of the Second Republic to Besullo and its parish.
Works such as ‘La Dama del Alba’, ‘Nuestra Natacha’ and ‘La Casa de los siete balcones’ reflect the atmosphere and memories of the Besullo of his childhood. Exiled after the Civil War, he lived in Buenos Aires until 1962, when he returned to Spain, only to die in Madrid three years later. The Besullo Visitor Reception Centre is dedicated to him, his work and his figure.
