Besullo
A history between tradition and the avant-garde
‘I was born, at 6 o'clock on 23 March 1903, in the mossy greenery of Besullo, an Asturian village in the council of Cangas del Narcea, inhabited mainly in those days by farmers, shepherds and blacksmiths. Since my father and mother were both teachers, national teachers, or, in other words, both protagonists of a certain saying, popular and true, which proclaimed the legendary hunger of Spanish schoolteachers, I was therefore a poor child. But not because I was a poor child and, moreover, a villager, did I cease to be a happy child. One was happy with little in Besullo. Because there were the barns. And the horses. And the trees’.
- Alejandro Casona -
Besullo has a long and amazing history.
From the primitive settlers more than 5000 years ago, through the presence of the Pésicos (Celtic people who occupied the south-west of Asturias) and the subsequent Roman influence during the first two centuries of our era, to the remarkable industrial development of the 19th century, this small village in deep Asturias has been the scene of historical curiosities and wanderings that made it a cultural, industrial and educational reference for a time.
Perhaps the most outstanding aspect of Besullo, which has made its name known worldwide, is that it was the birthplace of the playwright of the Generation of ‘27 Alejandro Casona. And his figure is a kind of mortar that brings together in his life and work the whole history and trajectory of this formidable village, which was a pioneer in education, industry and many other fields, thanks largely to the presence and work of the Protestant Community that settled in Besullo in the last third of the 19th century.
