Bar Casa Manón, in Besullo (Cangas del Narcea)

Bar Casa Manón

When, not so many years ago, some of the villages in this parish had no other access to the town of Cangas del Narcea than the road that linked it to Besullo, this was a village where the locals could find several shops where they could buy anything from a litre of oil, rice or chocolate, to grain for grinding, rubber boots, ‘madreñas’, cart wheels or butane gas cylinders. At that time, before the extension of the local road CN3 linking the parish of Las Montañas and Cuarto de La Barguera with Cangas, through Trones, Besullo had a regular bus line that transported travellers from 'los l.lugares' (‘the places’) to the village of Cangas, bringing them back after a few hours, loaded with all the purchases made in the capital.

The Casa de Manón was the head of this bus line and also had a bar, a shop, a grain store and a butane gas distribution point. These were hard times, but Besullo maintained its status as the main centre of the area, with constant activity and a notable commercial and leisure activity.

In the Casa Manón warehouse, in the mid-1960s, the Besullo Cinema was set up, promoted by Pepe de Tole and other neighbours. It was a stable cinema that showed films every weekend and was the leading leisure venue for the youth and the neighbourhood in general in the whole parish.

Nowadays, Casa Manón no longer has a shop, a grain store or a regular bus line to Cangas. But it still has its bar, a classic chigre, which functions as the social centre of the village, a meeting room, a gathering room and the official ‘discutidero’ (chat room) of Besullo.
