Hillfort of San Chuis

The Pico San Chuis hillfort, in San Martín de Beduledo, in the municipality of Allande, was discovered by José Lombardía Zardaín, a resident of Allande. The first excavations were carried out in 1962 and 1963 under the joint direction of Elías Domínguez and Francisco Jordá. They were resumed in 1979, under the exclusive responsibility of the latter, and continued in short summer campaigns until September 1986.

The sequence of occupation of the San Chuis hillfort began in the 8th century BC, when a first continuous wall was built, to which another modular structure was superimposed during the second Iron Age. Its defensive condition was reinforced by several lines of moats on its southern flank.

The Roman presence is evident from the middle of the 1st century AD in a context marked by the intense mining activity carried out in the abundant gold deposits in the surrounding area. The late occupation is today ruled out as it is based on an erroneous identification of ceramics which, in reality, are regional productions from the High-Imperial period.
